Vigna mungo, also known as black gram, urad bean, urid bean, mash kalai, uzhunnu parippu, ulundu paruppu, minapa pappu, uddu, or black matpe, is a bean grown in South Asia.

Like its relative, the mung bean, it has been reclassified from the Phaseolus to the Vigna genus

Matpe Beans are the black seeds of the leguminous plant called Vigna mungo and mainly grown in India, and to some extent throughout tropical Asia.

This lentil is available in four varieties whole with skin, whole without skin, split with skin and split without skin.
